This is an rt-PCR test. An rt-PCR or PCR test is a type of "molecular diagnostic test". It is performed in a high complexity laboratory on special machines that are designed to detect the presence of viral RNA particles. If the particles are detected, the test is considered positive. PCR testing is the gold standard and is the most accurate and is more likely to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 than other tests on the market. A PCR test is most likely to tell you that you have the virus when you do and to tell you that you do not have the virus when you don't.
How does PCR testing compare to antigen testing?Currently, PCR testing is much more sensitive than most antigen tests. Antigen tests usually have a sensitivity of approximately 80% to 84% whereas our PCR test is 98% sensitive. This means that an antigen test will not detect that you have the virus up to 20% of the time even though you do, whereas a PCR test will not detect it only 2% of the time on average. The PCR test is the most sensitive testing option available today.
What lab is performing this test?AZOVA partners with a network of laboratories across the country. We partner only with CLIA certified laboratories who perform FDA authorized tests.
How is COVID-19 treated? There is currently no cure for COVID-19 so treatment revolves around managing symptoms. For most people symptoms can be managed at home with rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications. However, some people experience severe symptoms and require hospitalization. If you are experiencing symptoms, you can get an online telemedicine visit here.
What is the recovery time for COVID-19?According to the World Health Organization, the recovery time for mild COVID-19 cases is about 2 weeks while severe or critical cases can last anywhere between 3 and 6 weeks.
Should I Get Tested for COVID-19?You should get tested for COVID-19 if you develop COVID-19 symptoms such as fever or chills, cough and shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing. You should also be tested if you have been exposed to an active infection or if needed for your profession. If you have further questions about your eligibility for COVID-19 testing, get an online telemedicine visit here.
How do I get a COVID-19 test kit?Your organization has provided a COVID testing program to enable onsite COVID testing. Please check with your COVID testing program manager to obtain a test kit.
How does the test work? What does it measure? The test determines whether you have been infected by testing for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in your saliva. It does this by detecting unique genetic markers that are specific to the virus. This is not an antibody test and only detects whether you are currently infected.
Is this test different from tests available at hospitals and doctor’s offices? This is the same testing technology that is used in the hospital setting. Most of the tests currently available use a nasopharyngeal swab. This test uses a simple saliva sample to test for COVID-19.
How do I register my test kit?You must register your kit at https://register.azova.com before your kit is shipped back to the lab. This will link your lab order to your sample so we can send you a lab report.
How do I collect my saliva sample?Follow the instructions provided with the kit to collect a saliva sample.
When and how will I receive my results?Your results will be reported within 24 to 72 hours from the time the laboratory receives your test kit. You will receive a notification once your kit has arrived at the lab and you’ll receive an email and/or SMS notification with a HIPAA secure link to view and share your results.
